I´ts nice to see RL in SL. The most buildings are only high tec stuff. No culture, nothing. But this.... WOW. Never noticed Germany has such nice buildings.

Fantastic! I've been to Dresden, and I've seen the Zwinger in RL. This place really rocks! I can feel the love that went into creating this place. I mean, it's not only the paintings. It's the architecture that impresses me most. The lighting, the floors, the walls, the arrangement of pictures. I mean, you even have waste bins in the park! Unbelievable. And then the art. I have always wished some places would be recreated and re-visitable like this is. Thank you for showing that it is indeed possible. Of course, no replacement for a real visit, but for re-visiting, just great.
Thanks again

I was given a teleport link here by another resident who recommended the Dresden Gallery.
The buildings look wonderful, although the plaza is a bit empty. You could install some billboards of some of the art pieces inside. You could instal a "vote for this place" post (if there is one I haven't seen it yet).
In RL I would have had an idea of what is in the gallery before my visit (eg from a tourist office). In SL I find it difficult to find general information that's helpful to a tourist. Visitors could get a "leaflet" with information before entering the gallery, eg list of artists, subject matter etc and some advice on viewing eg use camera controls to 'move' along the walls instead of walking between paintings.
The Information map in the vestibule could be clearer and/or interactive, easier to read at least.
There is some wonderful art here. One of the key differences in comparison with RL is that the artwork's title and the artist's name is not posted next to the works, you have to touch each work separately to read a note. Then I discovered that this information is displayed in a little floating bubble if you leave the cursor over the artwork, that's better. Except it doesn't have artist/title/date info.
The key and obvious difference between viewing in SL and a real gallery is that the viewed object is only the size of a postcard or smaller on your computer screen, even after you've zoomed in so viewing does not have great impact; it's as if you can only look from 3 metres away.
When you zoom into the artwork for a closer look the quality is very impressive given that this is on a computer, but there is still a bit of fuzziness, could the image resolution be increased? Is there some way of getting really close to examine the painting style and texture? Maybe just on selected pieces.
I enjoyed the Canalettos, which I had not seen before and Rotari's portraits. Are the real equivalents of these paintings in the real Dresden? A bit more info would have been appreciated. Maybe I simply failed to find the extra background info.. is it there somewhere (in SL)? Where, for example is Pirna? And some bio on Canaletto..
The ambience inside the gallery is a bit dour or austere, what about some features? Security cameras, flowers, windows with views, security guards, video installations of background information, things to liven up the visiting experience.
Several paintings are behind doors! Maybe lose the doors.
The guestbook obviously works (it worked on me at least!), maybe some of the reviews/comments could be viewed in SL.
For a computer modelling exercise it's brilliant and worth a visit for that alone. I hope it is expanded and enhanced. Every RL art museum should have an SL installation. A visit in SL is just a taster that could never hope to really mimic the RL experience but it can be informative and rewarding and give a resident the urge to visit the real thing. If Dresden Gallery is to be expanded/improved maybe there could be a group to inform members.

Very impressed by the quality of the paintings. Not so much impressed by the buildings. I think the buildings cause too much lag and take away from the enjoyment of the paintings. I would like to see a better resolution in the paintings, but the one currently used is good enough for close-up details. Good work overall.

Second Life Member Crisis Allen, 11.08.2007

C'est de loin l'expérience de musée virtuel la plus réussie que j'ai pu voir dans SL. Félicitations à l'équipe qui a réalisé cette ensemble.

Second Life Member Mariska Barzane, 11.08.2007

I'm rather new in the Second Life environment but once I figured out how to use the camera controls to zoom in on different paintings it was wonderful. I was able to examine painting details just like I would if I were visiting the real world Dresden Gallery. The detailed environment also gave my experience the authentic "feel" of visiting a world class museum.

This sim is a marvel. I wish my system was capable of handling it. I was first given a landmark by someone who recommended this sim, but it placed me in a gallery from which I could not find my way out! All I did was bump into things. I finally teleported to the outside and started from scratch.
I noticed that some paintings have their title and artist available when you roll your cursor over them, but only a few. I really think this is an important feature, especially for someone with a weak system like mine for whom clicking twice to get that info on a notecard is just too much. However, I do see that providing the slurl in that process is dead useful. The discreet placement of maps is helpful as well. I look forward to coming back to explore a little bit at a time.
Thank you for creating this amazing resource.
Note: Why are there two drunken Hercules paintings?

(Remark from the Curator: The “Drunken Hercules, being led away by a Nymph and a Satyr” was painted around 1613/14 by Peter Paul Rubens for his private house in Antwerp. Shortly thereafter, he repeated the picture with the participation of his workshop assistants as a commission for the Gonzaga duke, Vincenzo II from Mantua.)

Second Life Member Corcosman Voom, 13.08.2007

I was only able to visit the gallery for a short time but was very impressed. I will return often.
The reproductions are very good and make the visit worthwhile. I very much appreciate having the notecards avaiIable for each individual piece of art. I will most likely never visit Dresden in real life and having the museum available in this manner is a wonderful experience.
I was surprised at the low number of visits. It would be good to have some of the widely read bloggers visit and give you a mention. I am going to IM Natalia Zelmanov since I know one of her interests is art and she can generate some interest if she writes about you.

------------------------------

Second Life Member Inara Juran, 18.08.2007

Breathtaking.... from the moment you enter the sim and see the buildings. But that is only the beginning. The inside is even better than the outside. The execution, flawless. While it would also be nice to be able to really get close to the images - to be able to see every detail - it is not necessary to enjoy the fine selection of art that has been made available. Art books, university courses, visitors recounting their travels, all rely on images of the original. This museum is just such a keepsake. I would hope that additional history and descriptions of each piece could be made available for those of us not familiar with the artists and their works. This is now among the best of the landmarks that I will keep. Thank you SO much for making this possible.

------------------------------

Second Life Member Surty Slok, 19.08.2007

Superb representation. The artwork notecards could hold a lot more information, including the context in which it was created, the background to the artist and their historic setting.

This place is the greatest place I saw in Second Life since I travel in it.
I can't imagine the amount of work it represents... I don't know the real Dresden museum, but I can feel the atmosphere of a real visit to the museum, even through a 3D experience.
Amazing!

------------------------------

Second Life Member Del Wellman, 23.08.2007

The magnificence of the art is over shadowed by the perfection of the building. Knowing the amount of work and skill that must have gone into the creation of this gallery puts its creator(s) on a par with the artists on display.
Wonderful work.

It was a wonderful and fascinating experience to visit the museum, although the rendering was very slow. It was a little difficult to orient but it´s always nice to be lost between works of art.
As an art teacher, I'd like very much to bring my students here.
Congratulations!

Hello,
Thank you for making the Dresden Gallery available here in SL. Like most people I probably will never get to see the real-life gallery so this is a wonderful oppurtunity. I like that you are recreating the actual buildings as well as the art. This makes it more real, though I miss the other senses here. Background noises and the smell add something to a visit to an art gallery that is unfortunately missing here.
I hope other galleries follow your lead and bring themselves online in SL.

Very impressed, nice to be able to easily change perspective with Second Life Camera controls. The only location where I urged my wife to join me.
Some pictures took very long to form but I believe that I could see as much through Second Life as in person. An excellent use of Second Life. The notecards for each painting should have more information.

Second Life Member Jester Jiagu, 12.10.2007

This place is awesome. Very beautifully done. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the medium it can be a strain on the eyes. Or maybe I should have done it in small doses. But just like in a real museum, there is so much to see and I want to see it all. The dimensions maybe too realistic as navigating through here was a little difficult in some of the tighter spaces. That may have contributed to the eye strain. The sense of history is also lost. As a virtual experience it was great and I will be back.

Second Life Member fanny collins, 21.10.2007

Tres beau site impresionnant juste un reproche maque fond musical style classique merci fanny.

------------------------------

Second Life Member Aleister Kronos, 22.10.2007

This is one of the best sites I've seen in Second Life. The rich detailing of the site contributes hugely to a sense of total immersion - in other words, it is like "being there." However, it goes further - it is possible to get so much closer to the paintings than would be possible in Real Life, you can take it at your own pace, return many times, listen to the audio guides - or simply study the works at leisure. In Real Life, there is always the nagging sensation that you need to move on - before tiredness and aching feet get the better of you!
Congratulations on a breath-taking build. It really shows how a virtual environment can not only provide a passable impression of the real environment. This site levers the strengths of the virtual, to provide a level of engagement with the paintings that I think is almost impossible for the visitor in Real Life. Thank you for such a great addition to Second Life.

Second Life Member Nash Kuhn, 12.11.2007

Thank you for this experiment! - To put my comments in context I feel I must relate a short personal story. For years I read about art, the Masters and Impressionism and only saw pictures in books. My first viewing of an original was part of the Annenberg Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A very moving experience. I spent 30 minutes staring at Monet's water lilies. The environment was very important for me then: the relative size, the texture, the breath of the painting. It remained so as I viewed art in Berlin, Rome, Japan, Taiwan, and elsewhere. Experiencing these paintings in SL is not comparable, of course. But I nevertheless find it much better to view the paintings here in SL than in a book. I was truly struck the by the grandeur and size of the paintings in RL. I can get that same general feeling with my avi standing in front of Mocks entry of the king into Warsaw. I enjoy observing texture and strokes which is clearly more difficult on paper or in SL. Again, given a choice, I would come to SL over picking up a book. In terms of environment, passing from room to room, over the parquet floor and through the paneled doors certainly helps convey a sense of being "here." I've viewed paintings at other SL locations but they did not resemble any sort of RL museum or gallery. The paintings were out of context in some respects. I can still zoom them in full screen but not the same as what you have presented here. I need to develop a slow, deliberate museum amble-walk for my avi - that would help! On a slightly lighter, completely superficial level, not fighting the tour bus crowds is great! Thanks again for making this available, Nash

Wow, really mindblowing! The audioguides are really good and I'm happy one can now fly on this SIM :-). I work towards something similar for my museum Nationalmuseum Stockholm. We have a little exhibition so far on Second Life at Second House of Sweden (132, 171, 30). We hold 30 min live voice-chat, guided tours sometimes. Hoping for more places like this.

------------------------------

Second Life Member Manolo Jannick, 25.12.2007

I loved it! The biggest drawback is looking at electronic versions of these works on a computer screen. But it is a nice preview and would make a trip to the RL museum more fulfilling now. Thanks!

------------------------------

Second Life Member Cosmicmomma Destiny, 28.12.2007

Excellent experience. I visited this museum (in the real world) last spring. This was just like being there! I will have to tell my son's German teacher about this! It is an incredible thing that you have been able to recreate this! I will definitely be back often to visit. Thank you for all your efforts!
I was very impressed with the environment that you created-it was astonishing in its level of detail and accuracy. SL obviously has substantial limitations interns of rendering detail but I was impressed at what you were able to create. The experience of the art was interesting in that I was able to look at it within the environment but the virtuality of it was always apparent. I think it is the beginning of something quite wonderful but I do miss the texture and detail that comes with standing in front of the art-moving from side to side-seeing the energy and detail on the canvas and feeling the age of it. The lack of a tangible thing feels more pronounced than even a book offers. Perhaps having something in your hands transports you in a more visceral way than an image on a screen.
Lovely job. I will come back again to see what develops.

This is a wonderful place and a great idea! While I could just google paintings all day long, it's great to be able to see them as you might if you went to the gallery. Thanks!

Second Life Member Afton Llewellyn, 11.01.2008

It is possibly my computer, or internet connection, but the time-lag is slow; concentrating more on trying to move & look than the collection. But, the direction is great, guiding me to where I need to go. I love this idea! This is what I was hoping SL would be, the opportunity to see & experience things I couldn't in First life... The acousticguide tour is really nice as well, I just wish it were available for every painting! There are several works that I wish I knew the artist's name at least. Thank you very much for letting me visit, I appreciate all the hard work you have put into it! I will definitely visit again when my connection is faster.

Second Life Member Ecco Bedrosian, 14.01.2008

I am actually torn on this issue of the reproduced image, whether virtually or in glossy mags. Personally, I love to see works reproduced in magazines since I cannot financially afford to go globe trotting to see every exhibit that interests me. I feel that the reproduced image, in its entirety, is necessary, in that, it brings to one's attention works of art that may be inaccessible to one otherwise. On the other hand, there is no feeling that can replace that of looking at original works and to know its presence [Read John Burger's Ways of Seeing for essays dealing with this subject].

Second Life Member Dnali Anabuki, 23.01.2008

Beautiful… very, very beautiful. I will never be able to see the real Dresden Gallery. Thank you so much for giving us this wonderful place to see these wonderful works of art. I like this way of going to a museum because I don't get so tired and there are no crowds. The paintings can be studied at leisure and I can return again and again.
One thing I would ask, if the map could be in a notecard so I could refer to it as I walked around. I will return to take the acoustic tour.

My father comes from Germany, Leipzeg, and loved Dresden growing up (pre-WWII). He wanted to show us this fabled city, and the museum (2000). He had not been back for over fifty years.
We were very disappointed. Not by the holdings but by the incredible lack of welcome we received. Little was translated, and all people and staff we approached treated us poorly. We could not enjoy the museum at all, and I was happy to leave it and the town.
Thank you for creating this online version. While I always prefer to see the real life item and travel to visit museum, at least now I can see and even understand what I missed. Its not enough to make me want to go through the experience of visiting again, but it lessens the bitterness of the memory of my wasted vacation.

I love the virtual Dresden Gemaeldegalerie and I come often. It is much like having a membership to a museum. I can come back at look at one work, a group, a room or just wander through looking for someting new.
I live in the United States and there is no other way I would get to look at the Dresden collection. How does it compare to a regular museum? It is less crowded for one. I can use my camera to see works high on a wall. The lighting is consistent, no paintings in the dark - each one clear. At the same time it is more friendly than a regular museum. I have had good conversations with a few people. Of course any reproduction is less than the real painting but I think this is the next best thing.

This has got to be the most incredible sim I've seen since rezzing into SL nearly a year ago. I could spend a year here looking at the displays and still not see them all. I love the audio tracks that accompany many of the works.
I cannot imagine building something like this (I'm a builder) - it must have been an immense complex task from people who knew the original building intimately as well as the works themselves. A tip of my virtual hat to your incredible, detailed work. The fact that there are five sims prims devoted to this work speaks to it's detail. Every builder in SL should see this place and be awed by it.
Thank you for a wonderful experience. I will be back to study the paintings in more detail (I loved art history in college).

Unluckyly I have no comparison with the RL-Gallery but this is an expediant and one of the most impressiv places in here. This place is satisfying unlike other places in SL that give you the feeling to waste your time. Except for the lower solution of some less art works (maybe It's not possible sometimes to have an higher resolution). It's a wonderful experience to walk around this wonderful athmosphere and to zoom into such great artworks and to discover more details.
Sincere thanks to all the peoples who create this wonderfull place and keep it goin on. I see the true sense and the potential of this platform to share the art with other peoples, to be creative and to stay in exchange with peoples 24 h per day. Kindest regards, Benn Leigh

I enjoyed my visit to the museum -- I have been here in RL. The audioguide is an excellent addition to the SL experience. I found the art remarkably 'present' -- in the sense of feeling like I was in a gallery looking at something. The quality of the reproductions is superb, and that helps tremendously in this regard. The lighting is good -- better than in galleries sometimes! -- and the opportunity to stand or sit and really LOOK at the art and develop an individual relationship with the pieces is genuine. Hooray for the Dresden Gallery. I will suggest this as something my colleagues should look at to see how an aesthetic experience can be created in a meaningful way in SL.

I think the SL-gallery is marvelous way to prepare for visiting the real life gallery in Dresden. I hope soon to go there. It's cool to watch the paintings in the gallery without to have to worry about other visitors or blocking their way so they can't see anything. And I can go there with messy hair at all time of the day - just feeling comfortable;) Well. What I miss is the interaction between the SL possibilities and the way to learn about the painters or the paintings. I like the description of how to paint and the reflection of light (Maltechnik, Canalettos), but somehow it must be posible to let the visitors play with the paintings and learn some more about the age, the technic or just get comfortable with the art. You def. need a playroom. Or let the visitor walk around in the paintings to show them some interesting details of the painting. But all that said. I think the paintings are very wonderful put up. So you also have to show them like they are in real-life. The Acousticguide is a really good.

Thank Dresden Gallery for the wonderfully journey :D

Fabulous that all can experience the masters in an authentic setting when it is not possible to view in RL

Never seen a better Virtual Museum in SL :)

Second Life Member Draxtor Despres, 11.10.2008

i was aware of the build for a while and now finally i spent some time in here. I took my father, who in RL lives 15.000 miles away from me into the build and showed him around. It was fascinating. The fact that important art and incredible history can be accessible to everyone in the world is amazing. Maybe the visitor has never been in a RL museum because of his or her upbringing. The exposure that SL can bring to treasures such as this collection is really a great example of what virtual worlds can do, if they remain free and open.

This is an extremely impressive presentation of one of the greatest museums of art in the world. As usual when Germans do things it is comprehensive and rich in depth. The presentation is impossible to walk through in one sweep.

I have been to the real Dresden Gallery and it is extremely large and has a huge number of masterpieces. And this presentation emulates that real world very good.

I am astounded. And of course the money put into it makes the quality very good.

Terrific experience! This is where I go most in SecondLife - wonderful job! Is this as good as real life, no - but it is as close to real life as it can get. I live in the United States and will unlikely make it to Dresden anytime soon - but through this medium, I can explore works in your collection in a better way than through digital images on the plain Internet. The audio tour is a great touch - it works perfectly. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing what else you have in store to try to define how museums will be operating in the 21st century.

This is the most impressive sim that I have visited in Sl. I am very grateful to the Dresden Museum team for mounting this exhibition. The entire project is enchanting and for someone from Vancouver BC, Canada this is a wonderful way to interact with your collections.

I have greatly enjoyed visiting the gallery twice, and there is still more to explore. I have created a bookmark and will return. The imagery is good quality and encourages me to seek more information on some of the pictures. I have been lucky that very few other avatars have been in the gallery at the same time as me ! Thank you for this opportunity to view some beautiful paintings.

Hi, I am not very good at this but this is a very nice gallery I am really impressed. Congratulations!

I would love to be able to travel and see these pictures in person. I am sure they are even more awe inspiring that way. But I love that you have put them here on Second Life. There is something about seeing them all together on the walls that is incredible. I wish you had put the names of the Artist and the titles next to each painting like you did a few of them. Rather than needing to pull up note cards for each one. It would add to the experience.

I must congratulate you on the excellent presentation you have created here at the SL Dresden Gallery. It is by far the best site I have yet to visit here.

The architectural detail serves the site well and establishes the necessary gravitas that the home for these masterpieces deserve. As an Architect myself, I can appreciate the effort taken in creating this virtual replica and am now further encouraged that the virtual world can offer a new generation in understanding design with our clientele. I would love to tour the other shells of the campus someday with or without displays of the collection.

I was most impressed with the quality of the images from your collection and was particularly pleased to see the large number of Canaletto pieces. ( He's a favorite of mine. ) Although nothing surpasses the opportunity to view the collection in the actual world, the virtual world creates the opportunity to view the collection. The expense and difficulty of travel are eliminated and the collection can be brought to a far wider group than ever before. The audio guide worked flawlessly and added insight and depth for the tour. I would encourage you to add more as time and budget allow.

My only critique would be to have a graphic posted next to each piece with date, title, artist information. Clicking and keeping notecards became a bit tedious after a while.

Again, allow me to applaud your effort. I encourage you to continue your efforts to develop this new world. No doubt, Plato would have seen this as a realization of the "world of ideas"

Whoever built this virtual museum has done a great Job. I visited Dresden three years ago and was amazed at the restoration that has been done not only to the Museum, but to all the city which was flattened during the war.

I love visiting.... I had a book in black and white from the thirties from this gallery, Meisterwerke der Galerien Europas Dresden. I often thought of paintings destroyed or lost during last century's terrors. I was glad to see an Angelica Kaufmann, and some Rembrants, etc. I'll come back. Its funny to come out of second life and see a graceful 18th century ladies portrait, or even a sensuous reclining venus.

I think it is a wonderful thing to put real places (that aren't just fakes with lots of stores) in SL. This way people from all over the world can visit the museum, even if they cannot travel to get there. The challenges, however, remain the fact that, due to limited capabilities of the computers that people are using, the art (and architecture) cannot be seen as well online as in real life. Also, like a book vs, say, a Kindle, there is no smell, dust, etc, to complete the experience.

Second Life Member River Wildcat, 25.02.2009

Kudos to all of you! I've been in sl for more than two years and can say with complete confidence that this is the finest site of its type in sl. The art is superb, and is framed beautifully. Your building is magnificent. I know how difficult it is to create something like this, having worked with someone on another gallery called Art With Heart.

It is almost as good to visit this gallery as it is to go to one in real life. It's inspiring visually; but the music makes it almost better in a way. Great job on the sound track.

Thank you!

Second Life Member Chatter Naxos, 02.03.2009

Fantastic. I bet the Museum is never this empty of patrons in real life. To be able to view this from the other side of the world is a great experience. Thank you for putting this on to 2ndLife. Regards

This is my first time in second life, and this art gallery is truly amazing! The difference is in real life, you would appreciate art better, as you can see it in real size, but of course, if I have time to visit the real gallery. Thanks for sharing this wonderful collection.

Your message: An excellent idea and an incredible amount of work. This is, however, aslo due to heavy lags, as there are so incredibly detailed and numerous objects in the same space. Especialy, the art pieces loaded very slowly on my aging PC, but they were definitely worth waiting for. And that you keep this place running without selling tickets - it's also marvellous.

This virtual gallery certainly has the feeling of the galleries that I have visited. The art, however, is somewhat hard to view due to the manipulation of the camera, higher/lower, right/left, etc. Some of the art is very clear to see, while some of it is very lossy, such as:

Artist: Joos van Cleve (c. 1485-1540/41)
Title: Small Adoration of the Magi. c.1517/18
Size: 110 x 70,5 cm
Material:  Oak
Gallery number.: 809

I really like the audio feature in Reubens room with a discussion of the art. Overall this is a very realistic experience. I will visit again.

An astonishing place. Incredible architecture and art. A must for every artist to visit.

However it's still best to view the work in real life, as you can't see layers of paint on a texture. These are of high quality however, and allready allow you to "sense" a lot of the painter's emotions upon the day of creating.

I would like that this reconstrucion of a real, important Kunstgallery could be an exemple to follow to a virtual rebuiding of the other maybe more important art's collection in the world. The difference between a visitor's real experience and this virtual one is not a problem. In a virtual vision is possible to appreciate the minimum detail of a masterpiece. On the contrary, expecially  in the rendering of the oil canvas, something goes in to decline, because the textures of any single brushstroke.

Amazing, truly an example that SL is so much more than what a lot of people believe it is.  I sat my young daugther down with me and let her follow my AV and listen to the audio tour.  There is no way in FL are I or my family in a position to experience the actual gallery, and having this opportunity to not just read about but "experience" is wonderful.  Many thanks for efforts of everyone involved in creating the gallery in SL.

This gallery is marvelous! The environment is just like a RL museum of classical art. I first ventured in on a day when I arrived home exhausted from a hard day's work and was looking to relax. From the lovely classical music, to the beautifully designed build, to the informative audio tour, it felt like a mini-vacation to Europe. Just the thing for a relaxing evening. Congratulations on a fabulous build!
