The “Canaletto View” is the most famous painting by Bernardo Bellotto, called Canaletto, and is one of the best known works in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. Since it was painted in 1748, this view of Dresden has shaped our image of the city like no other. However, time and the almost uninterrupted public exhibition of the painting in the Gallery have inevitably left their traces. Not only have the layers of varnish yellowed; old restoration work in the areas of sky has also become clearly vis…

Thank you to everyone who works on the Dresden Gallery in 2L. It's quite an amazing experience - especially for those of us who will probably never be able to visit the real gallery. Hopefully more museums and galleries will follow Dresden's lead in using spaces like 2L to take their museums to the visitors.

This is amazing piece of work and a scientific way of approaching arts and making it accessible. Althogh I am living in Dresden, this is a wonderfull way to have a look at that gallery. I will try to promote this to the faculty of arts-education maybe there are some upcoming projects then.
Too bad yet only few people did find this in the WWW and 2ndL.
I'll just was curious and going to take a look around.

By Andrew Curry
If you can't make it to Dresden this summer, consider teleporting. The pearl of the city's museum collection, the Old Masters Picture Gallery, recently opened a virtual version of itself in Second Life. Second Life representatives say it's the first real-world museum to "clone" itself online, although virtual versions of other collections (most famously "Second Louvre," which has no official ties to the Paris museum) hav…
